The Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School (PEGS) Music Centre, located in Melbourne, Australia, is the latest in a series of interventions undertaken by McBride Charles Ryan (MCR) across the PEGS Campuses. The existing single-level Victorian ‘house’ in this project was used by the School for music tuition. This new building sits alongside one of MCR’s earliest projects for PEGS, completed in 2009, the Junior Boys’ Year 5&6 Building, which plays with the tension between the School and its suburban context, perception, and childhood imagination. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) unveiled its design for the New York City Public Health Laboratory, a ten storey building meant to strengthen the metropole's capability to respond to a variety of public health issues and future challenges. The laboratory is organized within a cubic glass volume stepping outward, which rises from a masonry-clad podium containing community-related functions. Tsingpu Wulin Retreat is located in the ancient village of Wulin, Jinjiang City, Fujian Province, with a site area of about 6,000 square meters, consisting of 13 traditional houses of Fujian. Foster + Partners has revealed the master plan design proposal to regenerate Downtown Atlanta's Centennial Yards site. The 50-acre proposal transforms parking lots and former railyards into a community-oriented and inclusive mixed-use development of state-of-the-art buildings, amenities, and public spaces. “Korea National Arboretum Children's Forest School” is used as an educational and exhibition space to inform children about the importance of forests and the environment in a fun and easy way through the building and the exhibition of outdoor spaces.  The architectural concept is based on the biophilic design in which nature, ecosystem and architecture coexist. The first starting point of this project is the harmony between the building and the existing trees. We preserve the old fir and cypress trees and arrange the building around these trees. Bold colours, strong geometric shapes and a ‘flashback’ to the famous buildings of old Saigon come into focus in a new cinema design in HCMC. Vietnamese interiors company Module K has completed their first cinema. Located on the ground floor of an existing shopping mall, the 2000 m2 cinema for Beta Media seats 1000 and is aimed at millennials with its Saigon vibe and architectural vocabulary. Each detail of the design references significant Saigon landmarks dotted around the city: the Municipal Opera House, Ben Thanh Market, Central Post Office, Tan Dinh Church, Paris Commune Square and the small alleys. http://dlvr.it/S4YQJV

Getting Up. The beginning of a design can be based on a mood. I envied the tranquility and pleasantness of this city, which is scarce in Shanghai. Suddenly, I decided there should be a cloud, calmly and slowly rising over the river. Clouds have a sophisticated and pure beauty. Rather than perform cosmetic surgery on a collage of cluttered commercial territorial façades, I decided to wrap them in a continuous white perforated aluminum panel wall. The continuous white creates a complex and pure interface on the riverside (by controlling the perforation rate, the façade creates a cloud of layers) hiding the bookstore. The aluminum wall is the façade, or it can be stripped away to become a courtyard enclosure or both. The continuous white aluminum wall is used as an addition to create a serene and pleasant visual subtraction. The Polygon Gallery is the rebirth of the Presentation House Gallery, which has been a passionately independent photography and media institution in North Vancouver for more than forty years. The Morocco Pavilion at the 2020 Expo in Dubai, designed by architects OUALALOU+CHOI, showcases how traditional Moroccan design and construction techniques can find new relevance in contemporary design and urban development efforts. The concept of the project is based on the farmer's decision to switch from monoculture farming to agroforestry, which is a land use management system that grows different species of trees or shrubs around or among crops providing enhanced yields from staple food. The CRA House is located within a residential country club in Avándaro, Estado de México. The country club, like many others in Mexico, establishes general design criteria and suggests, with emphasis, the use of specific forms and materials. Given the mountain character of the site, the regulation infers the need to preserve the rustic character of the place through architecture. In most cases, regulatory constraints are real challenges that are solved through analysis and design. In this case, the design of the house proves a stylistic hybridization strategy, with the double purpose of giving continuity to the character of the whole, while at the same time articulating, in an alternative way, the different spaces and the program of the house. http://dlvr.it/S4QLcD

Singleness in an open site - Naegok-dong House (N House) is one of the few single-family housing sites that belong to public housing district developed by SEOUL LAND & HOUSING CORPORATION (SH). The site overlooking a large-scale apartment complex, where the road to the village and the road leading to the entrance of the large-scale apartment complex meet, is too public for a single-family house to be located in an urban context. Located on Fengcheng road in Yangpu district of Shanghai, the former Fuli Garment Factory, which was founded in 1985, is still running when we first came to the site. The workers were busy as usual, occasionally reminding us not to take photos of them. It was not the first time that the factory was renovated. Like every old building, changes took place as owners and users shift, gradually blurring the simplicity of the original space. Maggie’s Centre is a charity that provides free practical and emotional support for people with cancer. Prominently located in Innsbruck’s cultural center, this project was conceived for open cultural exchange across all ages and genres. The unifying element is music. MB apartment within the 1960’s blonde brick complex is named after clients Mary and Ben. It belonged to their grandmother who had survived WW2 Germany and relocated to Australia, purchasing this unit as an investment property which was rented and unmaintained for 35 years. Small Office in Minami Aoyama. This is a project for a small office for a tech start-up company located in a quiet area of Minami Aoyama, Tokyo. Since the total plan was decided in the early stage, I was supposed to design the interior of the president’s room, however, I thought that the relationship of each room would improve the quality of the whole office, so I replanned to design the whole interior design of the office. Therefore, it was premised on a proposal that the cost would not increase significantly from the original general specifications. In this situation, it was needed to provide a president’s office, a meeting room that doubles as a place for several employees to work, and a seminar room for engineer training for other companies. http://dlvr.it/S4KGz5

Following Rio de Janeiro’s inaugural hold of the title, Copenhagen has been named World Capital of Architecture for 2023 by UNESCO and will host the International Union of Architect’s World Congress 2 years from now. At its second edition, the initiative supported by UNESCO in partnership with UIA is meant to highlight the role of architecture and urban planning in shaping a sustainable future and tackling global challenges. The project’s site is located on a steep hillside in Zhangjiajie, with the ridges circling upward and the vertical drop is very large. The Zhangjiajie landform combines the characteristics of Danxia landform and quartz sandstone landform, they are not identical, which results in the formation of a unique peak forest landform. There are steep hillsides stand between the site and the road. Moreover, the dense verdant woods on the hillside adds more fun to the grand view. The entry point of the design is taking the site into consideration due to the enormous terrain difference. Rather than making the site rough and flat to avoid the harsh terrain conditions, it is better to let the building be immersed in everything around it freely, and use the terrain difference to layout the building, then make the building blends in the site as if they naturally grow together. http://dlvr.it/S4Gh9H

UNStudio has won the competition to redesign Sochi Waterfront with a masterplan that creates the framework for a vibrant urban environment for the local community while shaping a new identity for the notorious leisure resort on the Black Sea coast. Dubbed SoCo, the proposal seeks to create a year-round destination that would provide visitors with new attractions within Russia’s most important holiday destination, building on existing natural and cultural resources. Lie Sang Bong is Korea's leading fashion designer who creates contemporary styles reflecting traditional Korean and oriental aesthetics. His work is famous for getting a motif and inspiration from the Korean alphabet, Hangeul. He does shows in New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. Unsangdong and Lie Sang Bong have been discussing collaboration for several years as they share the vision that “fashion is architecture and architecture is fashion”. Since 2002, the historic city of Muharraq, the third-largest in Bahrain, has been the protagonist of a comprehensive preservation and development project meant to highlight its pearling history and improve the urban environment. Building on Muharraq’s legacy are several new structures designed by world-renowned architects to create the framework for the city’s revival, among which are four multistorey car parks designed by Christian Kerez and set to be completed this year. The elementary school provides an ideal educational facility for modern pedagogic approaches. It is an uncompromising example of cluster design offering a flexible and nurturing learning environment. In an elegant, one-story wooden structure, four identical teaching clusters are situated around a top-lighted lounge with a raised roof. The flat building blends harmoniously into the environment of single-family houses. The schoolyard in front of the auditorium is connected to the Unterdorf path network. At the time this project was conceived, Liberty United Methodist Church had outgrown its current campus on a prominent hilltop of the city. At 18,000 square feet, this project is the initial step in relocating the church to a 32-acre site that supports and encourages growth of the church membership. The site's location is on the outer strip of the city's intra muros area of Cluj, an area best described as an ​​architectural mélange of small historical houses with gardens and new and more expansive hotel and educational complexes. The new medical center occupies a small corner plot, between two streets with different hierarchies, and is replacing an existing ground floor house. At its eastern limit, hidden behind the gardens and houses, waves the course of the Water Mill’s Canal, designed since the 16th century to supply the water mills in the city. The private residence on Lilla Rågholmen used the free plan as a reference - a flexible floor plan, open facades, exposed structure, and horizontal openings – which enabled the program to be organized by the position of the sun, the angle of the views, and the request for privacy. Swedish practice Tham & Videgård Arkitekter has won a competition to design a new cadet mess building for the Karlberg Military Academy in Stockholm. Establishing a dialogue with the historical context and the 17th-century park, the project is conceived as a clean square volume with concave facades that embrace the surroundings. Three Stages for Air is a response towards a contradiction embedded in living on the equator; to be able to experience and enjoy the nuances of the tropical climate, yet simultaneously, to be protected from its extremes when required. Two entrances exist on the far ends of a radial ground-level apartment, one opens towards the exterior porch and the other opens towards the interior of the apartment complex, allowing tropical air to pass through laterally. http://dlvr.it/S3lQZm
