They include the old church, what remains of the old convent, and several buildings constructed mainly for industrial use in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The convent’s original cloister, chapter room, refectory, staircase, and library have all survived and have been used as an Events Centre for several years now. http://dlvr.it/Sy9sgp

The Distinctive Mosques of Sub-Saharan Africa

Hình ảnh
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to an enormous number of religious adherents – within which there is extraordinary diversity in religious expression. Iconic buildings serving a religious purpose are found throughout the continent, such as The Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Family in central Nairobi or the Hare Krishna Temple in South Africa. What is evident is that architecture that hosts religious gatherings makes up a key part of the urban fabric of sub-Saharan African cities and that in a lot of cases, religious structures go against the grain – leaving aside or tweaking classical models in favor of a unique architectural approach. http://dlvr.it/Sy7KKT

Urban Sanitation in India: Past, Present, and Future

Hình ảnh
With large populations come formidable challenges, particularly in the realm of health and hygiene. In the last century, upholding sanitary conditions in urban areas has remained a persistent challenge, particularly in a nation that houses over 1.5 billion people. India grapples with a myriad of issues- inadequate infrastructure for sanitation, lack of public toilets, and poor waste management practices. In densely populated cities, the struggle intensifies as sanitation and cleanliness management falters. India's rapid urbanization has outpaced the development of sanitation infrastructure and cleanliness issues have deeply entrenched in the nation's built environment. http://dlvr.it/Sxw6WH

The Decolonization of Architecture Is a Necessary Step in Its Decarbonization

Hình ảnh
Imagination and policy development go hand in hand. Before we can create policies that bring about a desirable future, we must first envision what that future looks like, which is particularly significant in Architecture because we see the future as an integral part of the design process. This familiarity with envisioning the future carries a responsibility for us to create guidelines and regulations that can either support or obstruct the direction our planet takes. http://dlvr.it/SxsSgg

Cloud Catcher Hospitality Building / MAP Design

Hình ảnh
Overview - The ‘Meet and Greet” building of Kavya Resort is sculpted to witness the drama of passing clouds. Placed in the highest resort in Nagarkot, Nepal, the site experiences a dynamic moment of clear visibility, suddenly changing into total obscurity. While the two rock-shaped volumes are oriented to capture views of the Himalayas and the valley below, their separation creates the passage for the clouds – sometimes bringing the fog and moisture deep inside the building. Here, you can experience the magical moments. http://dlvr.it/Sxn3Vc

Pyramid of Tirana / MVRDV

Hình ảnh
In the heart of Albania’s capital city, a new kind of cultural hub is now open and accessible to the public. The Pyramid of Tirana, originally built as a museum dedicated to the communist dictator Enver Hoxha, has been dramatically transformed by MVRDV. Reusing the concrete structure, the Pyramid is now an open sculpture in a new park. The park and the sculpture are home to an ensemble of colorful boxes, scattered in and around the original building that now houses cafés, studios, workshops, start-up offices, incubators, festivals, and classrooms where Albanian youth will learn various technology subjects for free. Steps have been added to the building’s sloping façades, allowing the people of Albania to literally walk all over the showpiece of the former dictator. http://dlvr.it/SxlFR0

Innovations and Potential of CPC Panels in Decarbonizing Concrete Construction: Interview with Josef Kurath

How New Technologies Are Evolving to Embrace Sustainability in Architecture

Hình ảnh
When we talk about technology, we often think of robots, supercomputers, data centers or smartphones. But technology also refers to the invention of the first chipped stone tools or the development of the steam engine, which brought about the first Industrial Revolution. The term comes from the combination of the Greek words techne (art, craft) and logos (word, speech) and is nothing more than the application of knowledge to achieve goals in a specific and reproducible way, for practical purposes. In the construction industry, which moves large amounts of resources and people, more technology means incorporating new methods, tools, automation and software that can improve efficiency. As a historically innovation-resistant industry, the construction sector has a huge impact on the environment due to its carbon emissions and exploitation of raw materials. However, as it turns to the digital world, builders have seen technology as a means to optimize practices and identify, build, and man

IDK Apartment Renovation / Demo Working Group

Hình ảnh
This project deals with the renovation of an apartment in a large-scale residential complex from the 1970s in the outskirts of Cologne. The apartment is inhabited by a family of four. With 82 m2 of living space, it is small by today‘s standards. Nowadays, 47 m2 per person are average in Germany. Our objective is to bring the apartment in line with contemporary spatial expectations. This invariably led to questions about standards of living, appropriateness and adaptability of existing structures in transformation scenarios. http://dlvr.it/SxVNHS

Are Carbon-Neutral Buildings Expensive?

Hình ảnh
Decarbonization of the building sector is no longer a choice but a necessity. As nations strive to curb their greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, it is increasingly clear that current building standards do not go far enough to drive tangible change. Achieving climate goals requires economies to advocate measures that drive carbon neutrality while managing associated costs effectively. How would net-zero performance strategies impact building costs? http://dlvr.it/SxDV6S

Jean Macé School / SOL architecture and urbanism

Hình ảnh
Trappes is a French suburban city located in the great area of Paris, with a large part of the population suffering from poverty and undergoing major changes in its built environment. To be able to accommodate its growing population, the city initiated the revitalization of its facilities, including schools. The Jean Macé complex is a great example of French school buildings from the end of the 60s. The city commission included the thermic rehabilitation of facades, the reorganization of uses and flow, and two extensions to accommodate new classrooms and a new leisure canter. Taking this as a starting point our objective was also to embrace the potential of the school and make it a safe and stimulating building for children with an emphasis on local and bio-sourced material and thermic efficiency. http://dlvr.it/SxB1kY

House for a Family of Cats and Dogs / AFAB

Hình ảnh
The project is based on two fundamental premises. The first of them was the intention to restore the plot to its landscape condition. This landscape condition is denied by the urban zoning process, which transforms the territory into something that is no longer a mountain or a valley, but a series of numbered plots characterized by parameters that have no relation to its original essence, such as its biodiversity, drainage capacity, resilience, etc; instead, they focus on its new condition as an urban product, such as square meters, building capacity, and occupancy percentage.  http://dlvr.it/Swsp6v

Urban Discourse Machine, Dr.Moghimi's Laboratory / Darkefaza Design Studio

Hình ảnh
This project is located in the Safayieh region in Yazd, which is one of those modern civil contexts in this city. Most of the constructions in this area are single materialled with the same form and without any dialogue with the city. The separator walls of these buildings in the street are all the same height and also, and they are all solid in material with no transparency, no matter the function of the building; because of that, the possibility of visual communication between passers and people with the buildings are very low and minimum. http://dlvr.it/Swqz6l
