Orientalism and Architecture

Hình ảnh
We are twenty-one years into the twenty-first century. The world has never been more connected with the advent of new technologies, yet historical inequalities still run rampant. These inequalities manifest themselves in different ways. Global travel, for example – despite the ubiquity of aeroplanes nowadays – is still only widely accessible to citizens of “developed” countries due to prohibitive visa restrictions. In architectural education, many institutions still prioritise a Eurocentric curriculum, the architecture of non-Western populations largely ignored. Another perpetuation of prejudiced systems is Orientalism – and exploring this concept through an architectural lens is useful for interrogating contemporary design approaches and approaches of the future. http://dlvr.it/SCSXF0

Kindergarten Pelėdžiukas Extension / DO Architects

Hình ảnh
Here, it’s hard to tell where the outside space ends and the inside space begins. The children start their day by crossing through the kindergarten courtyard, once inside it is possible to observe not only the spaces, which one inhabits, but the spaces adjacent to it as well: the courtyard, outdoor terrace, community halls, or the canteen. The inside spaces are akin to a city: the observing eyes create a sense of safety and community. The children and the teachers feel more than just a part of their class, they feel as if all of them are the owners of the kindergarten. Similar ideas are applied, whilst aiming to let in as much light into the building as possible: Not only the biggest size ceiling-to-floor windows and skylights are installed, but also interior glass windows to create transparency and absorb light from the rooms close by. http://dlvr.it/SCSXDk

Inside the Painstaking World of Miniature Building

Hình ảnh
This video takes us inside a professional model-building shop in Chicago called Presentation Studios International (PSI). They make models for all kinds of clients, but mostly for developers and architects. We get a tour of the shop from Robert Becker, an architectural designer and former employee. He helps us understand how models are conceptualized a little differently here than within an architectural office or in school. Here, they are almost strictly miniature buildings with the job of faithfully depicting a building design and serving as a persuasive tool to motivate investment. Then, we hear from Martin Chadwick, a life-long model builder to talk through the process of making high-quality miniature buildings and landscapes. http://dlvr.it/SCQ94L

How Emerging Practices Approach Sustainability in Architecture

Hình ảnh
The climate crisis has become a staple of the architecture discourse, with the field slowly acknowledging its contribution to environmental issues and seeking to reframe its values and approaches. However, there is an evident lack of commitment and consistency in addressing the matter and an absence of systemic change. Emerging practices, organizations and startups are carving a new architecture practice, slowly unfolding a paradigm shift beyond "green" add-ons and technical equipment. Addressing environmental issues on multiple levels, from policy and design strategies to materials and construction processes, the following are some of the actors reframing the profession's relationship with sustainability. http://dlvr.it/SCQ94J

A Non-Conventional Plumbing Solution for Zero-Waste Homes

Hình ảnh
According to a 2021 Food Waste Index Report by the United Nations, 17% of global food production goes to waste, becoming the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. 11% of this waste is generated by households, not only contributing to the climate crisis, but also provoking large economic costs, biodiversity loss, and the rise of pollution levels at unprecedented rates. Therefore, considering the key role that architecture and design plays in providing more eco-friendly housing options, it is essential to adopt and enhance a more self-sustaining, zero-waste approach. http://dlvr.it/SCLq2v

How Fire Protection Glass Can Save Lives without Compromising Design

Hình ảnh
While glass is generally singled out as the weakest part of a building, it is not always true. With technological advances and the continuous innovations of the industry, there is glass that, even while allowing natural light to enter an environment, can protect the building from fire. Beyond fire, there are also other threats such as hot gases, smoke, and heat transmission, which put the safe evacuation of people and the protection of property at risk. http://dlvr.it/SC8CV9

Transport by Electric Scooters: Are Our Cities Ready for Micromobility?

Hình ảnh
The rise of electric scooter fleets in cities around the globe happened almost overnight. By making transportation fun, they quickly took over a new market share and provided not only an easy way to travel but one that also prides itself in being sustainable. First becoming popular on the West Coast of the United States, scooters migrated eastward, eventually sweeping across Europe as well. Easy to maneuver and a convenient solution to get from place to place, we have to ask- can cities handle the accelerating rise of scooters and other forms of micromobility? http://dlvr.it/SC8CV2

Fengxi Primary School / MINAX Architects

Hình ảnh
There is an impassable boundary between physical buildings and free space in a high-density city. Under the principle of efficiency first, the using function often takes precedence over spatial interest and the two seem not to achieve symbiosis. The same goes for school buildings, where economic use of land is strictly regulated, resulting in the similarity of buildings. After the fundamental teaching units and auxiliary functions are laid out, space for free activities can no longer form a complete and continuous expression. The site is divided by buildings, in which the scale of the public space is in sharp contrast to the concentrated playing field. Buildings have little uniqueness and a clear narrative; thus, it’s easy to fall into a set of paradigms. On this basis, the school urgently needs new strategies to form new expressions and visions. http://dlvr.it/SC4kLY

Contested Territory: The Climate Crisis and Land Ownership

Hình ảnh
Architecture, by its very definition, involves the construction of structures. Structures that are meant to serve as spaces for work, living, religious devotion, amongst many other purposes. Architectural projects and interventions, however, need land – and it is this intrinsic relationship, between land and architecture, that has massive ramifications not only regarding reducing carbon emissions but more importantly in forming an equitable future rooted in climate justice. http://dlvr.it/SC2MT6

Behind The Scenes of a Daring Renovation

Hình ảnh
This is the story of architect Grant Gibson’s journey with a house in central Missouri. Originally designed with his mentor, Doug Garofalo, the owners have recently commissioned Grant to design an addition to their award-winning structure. The problem is the original house was designed to make it difficult to add anything at all, and Garofalo passed away shortly after the original house was constructed. Now, Grant, along with his practice CAMES Gibson, needs to design an addition to this house that defiantly resists alteration and to do it in a way that respects the original design while remaining consistent with his own beliefs and design ethos. The clients work closely with Grant to achieve this new design and find a solution to this very difficult problem. http://dlvr.it/SBzny4

The school group is the very first element of a new district in the Coupvray development area. More than having to deal with the particular constraints of a site, the main challenge is to create a founding and structuring public facility for the future inhabitants of this extension of the town. The building expresses the town-country boundary through two distinct vocabularies, thus creating a transition between the public and the private. Enaire Foundation / GFA 2 / Fernández-Abascal & Muruzábal

Hình ảnh
Adaptive reuse of the warehouses of Gamazo, the project provides new exhibition spaces for the Enaire Foundation in a prominent location on the former port of Santander. The main building was conceived in 1901 by Jesús Grinda y Forner but was substantially remodelled in the 1950s when the northern pavilion was added. Multiple alterations have occurred since then. In 2018, upon our arrival, the storehouse was substantially damaged. A restoration, and a cleansing exercise, set the basis of our intervention on the existing, eclectic, and heterogeneous warehouse. A careful renovation informed by the building’s history accommodates the new exhibition requirements. Simultaneously, the project aims for a certain abstraction. Turning the building white merges its diverse materials—a milky, long building next to Oiza’s strident Festival Hall. http://dlvr.it/SBznx9

Screened-In: Mastering the Brise-Soleil in France

Hình ảnh
The relationship between building envelope and structure remains a centerpiece of architecture. Understanding a building's skin is how designs become open or closed, controlling environmental conditions, light and views. Whether perforated, slotted or modular, brise-soleils are elegant envelopes that create new spatial conditions. This is especially true in France, where architects are rethinking tradition to bring new screened structures to life. http://dlvr.it/SBwMFV
