At the foot of the Roof Park in Rotterdam housing project, The Hudsons has been realized. The development adds 5 building blocks with 118 single-family homes, 24 apartments, and 2 commercial spaces to the Bospolder-Tussendijken district. The early 20th-century district of Bospolder-Tussendijken has been undergoing restructuring for decades. The more recent plans aim to integrate more mid and high-income groups into a district with a culturally highly diverse population. The Hudsons contributes to this ambition with great care. http://dlvr.it/SlfJqp

When Sunlight Meets Tadao Ando’s Concrete

Hình ảnh
If there is any consistent factor in his work, says Pritzker-winning architect Tadao Ando, then it is the pursuit of light. Ando’s complex choreography of light fascinates most when the viewer experiences the sensitive transitions within his architecture. Sometimes walls wait calmly for the moment to reveal striking shadow patterns, and other times water reflections animate unobtrusively solid surfaces. His combination of traditional Japanese architecture with a vocabulary of modernism has contributed greatly to critical regionalism. While he is concerned with individual solutions that have a respect for local sites and contexts Ando’s famous buildings – such as the Church of the Light, Koshino House or the Water Temple – link the notion of regional identity with a modern imagining of space, material and light. Shoji walls with diffuse light are reinterpreted in the context of another culture, for instance, filtered through the lens of Rome’s ancient Pantheon, where daylight floods thr

Bathrooms Made of Modular Components: Minimalist Aesthetics and Functionality

Hình ảnh
Bathroom accessories serve various functions, especially when it comes to hygiene, organization and practicality. Previously thought of as purely functional components, designed only to perform their intended use, today they are seen as compositional tools that contribute to the overall aesthetics of a bathroom. Careful consideration in the choice of pieces makes it possible to create a functional and pleasant space. As bathroom accessories have become more advanced and complex, designers have begun to explore the potential of incorporating aesthetic elements into their design, resulting in creating smarter, safer, and more beautiful accessories. http://dlvr.it/SlS5p8

The CIT is an initiative by Metro de Madrid to build a Transport Campus on the site of Plaza Castilla (Avenida de Asturias) where the former depots of Line 1 were located. The project has a double objective, on one side the urban regeneration through an existing plot, containing an obsolete Metro facility, and on the other hand the centralization of office spaces and services related to the transport in the Community of Madrid and to the already centennial Metro de Madrid. The new headquarters of Metro de Madrid company are completed (in 2022) as the first component of the Campus (Phase 01). The CCOR (New Technological and Operational Center), a building for the Regional Transport Consortium and the Museum of Transport will be included in a second phase. Alférez House / Ludwig Godefroy Architecture

The project of the house of the Alférez Gorge takes its origin from the concept of a cabin and the romantic idea of a protective shelter in the middle of the forest; an isolated house seeking to resemble an object that would have been deposited on the ground, among the trees. The Architecture of Countercultures: Utopian Movements in the United States and Berlin, Germany

Hình ảnh
The Law of Polarity holds good in relation to human society and cultures as well - everything has an opposite. Countercultures have erupted as condemnations of “the ways of the world”. A countercultural movement expresses the ethos and aspirations of a population during a specific time. As new lifestyles are explored, supporting architecture evolves to satiate the utopian ideals of new societies. Architecture is a product of the culture it is designed for. http://dlvr.it/SlD8Qw

This group of apartments is located in a garden neighborhood close to the financial center of Santiago, on a corner lot with a 50-meter-long front, developed by a group of friends as a project to create something different than what is usually available on the real estate market. The construction is conceived as a unitary volume facing the street, structured by two superimposed models. Lengthwise, a series of wooden elements enhance the intimacy between the street and the back of the lot. Crosswise, a series of concrete walls divides the total volume into five equal bays. http://dlvr.it/SlD8Bn

House with Four Roofs / Denkkamer

The plot has a special location in the middle of structures of an old medieval agricultural area. The plot is enclosed by a small-scale forest on the one hand and on the other hand, it has a view towards the vast landscape of the Peel. The house expresses a new way of constructing and living in the rural area of the Brabant Peel municipalities. http://dlvr.it/Sl99L5

Eventually, a total of 50 cabins will be built. This house, type “Refuge”, is one of the four designs in the third phase of the project, of which Phase 1 was realized in 2017 and Phase 5 is planned for 2026. http://dlvr.it/Sl710D

Qujiang Museum of Fine Arts Extension / Neri&Hu Design and Research Office

Hình ảnh
The Qujiang Museum of Fine Arts is located at the beginning section of Xi’an’s Datang Everbright City, south of the famed Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. The client asked for a new architectural icon at the East Entry of the museum. In response to the brief, Neri&Hu’s proposal takes the idea of a monolithic urban monument as the guiding concept to not only satisfy the museum’s newly expanded cultural and commercial functions but to also serve as an anchor and a durable symbol of social history for the surrounding urban fabric. Since the vicinity of the site is occupied by existing galleries, the design intervention minimizes the impact of the new building through careful consideration of the architectural massing and detailing. http://dlvr.it/Sl4sRH

A shared studio was created in the space of former medical practices in a cultural heritage building in the square in Frýdek-Místek. We created a multifunctional space with a hair salon, an architectural-sculptural studio, and a residential floor using our own resources. The main elements are wooden structures made from low-cost materials such as roof battens, spruce boards, polycarbonate, and steel profiles. Since we realized the interior for ourselves, many elements and details were created during construction. http://dlvr.it/Skyxkk

The UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 Copenhagen Science Track Announces the 6 Themes of Its Agenda

Hình ảnh
The UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 is an invitation for architects from all around the world to meet in Copenhagen to explore and communicate how architecture influences all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Science Track of the UIA World Congress has been tasked with the development of the agenda, Sustainable Futures – Leave No One Behind. For more than two years, its international Scientific Committee has been analyzing the various ways in which architecture responds to the SDGs. The work has resulted in the formulation of six themes: climate adaptation, rethinking resources, resilient communities, health, inclusivity, and partnerships for change. ArchDaily is collaborating with UIA to share articles pertaining to the six themes to prepare for the opening of the Congress on July 2, 2023. http://dlvr.it/SkvvCQ

The Phenomenology of Light in Contemporary Religious Architecture

Hình ảnh
The significance of daylight in volumes of space exceeds its function of illumination. Light is a creative tool manipulated by architects to infuse a space with a metaphysical spirit, influencing the emotional states of its occupants. Having a phenomenological effect on the human psyche, light and shadow have been played with to invoke a sense of divinity and spirituality into the character of religious buildings. The interplay between architecture and light is a powerful one, shaping a deeper experience of spirituality. http://dlvr.it/SkrqxQ

Living Small: Furniture and Accessibility

The Youtube channel Never Too Small boasts 2.25 million subscribers — a platform featuring the imaginative manipulation of space in tiny footprints. Videos of micro-apartments, in Paris, London, and beyond, get views in the millions. Clearly, there is a demand for content geared towards living small, as a global housing crisis has precipitated the ever-dwindling availability of affordable, larger-footprint residences in urban areas. Architects, working in this constrained contemporary reality, have been necessitated to make the most out of limited space, configuring sub-40 square-meter floor areas to create a non-claustrophobic spatial experience. http://dlvr.it/Skns74

Who Is Sir David Chipperfield? 17 Things to Know About the 2023 Pritzker Architecture Laureate

Hình ảnh
Few architects in history have had the honor and privilege of intervening in the famous St. Mark's Square in Venice — a tourist landmark of incomparable historical value to humanity. Sir David Chipperfield is one of them. As if that was not enough, he also left his mark on another project of inestimable value: the Neue Nationalgalerie, designed originally by Mies van der Rohe in Berlin. The four centuries that separate the design from its restoration seem to pose no difficulties for the 2023 Pritzker Prize winner, who rejects an international style of architecture in search of a trait that highlights local qualities. http://dlvr.it/SkXtvx

Residência Braúnas / Reinach Mendonça Arquitetos Associados

Serving as a summer house for the families of two brothers, Braunas Residence organizes an extensive program of social and private spaces on a single-floor house. Both families already used to get together often on weekends and vacations, so it was a natural decision to build the project as a coexistence space for the whole family. As for the project, that meant the only strict spaces are the couples' suites, children's bedrooms are shared between cousins and every other space is for common use. http://dlvr.it/SkQn4s

7 Brazilian Country Houses and Their Strategies for Comfort and Sustainability

Hình ảnh
Country houses usually are found in remote areas, therefore, they often demand placement strategies that respect the context and dialogue with the landscape while bringing more thermal comfort and natural lighting. Most of the time, these solutions bring passive strategies that, along with the choice of materials and construction techniques, can provide an even more sustainable project. Get to know seven Brazilian residences that are examples of this theme. http://dlvr.it/SkNf7k

How Amsterdam Uses the Doughnut Economics Model to Create a Balanced Strategy for Both the People and the Environment

Hình ảnh
In 2020, in the midst of the first wave of lockdowns due to the pandemic, the municipality of Amsterdam announced its strategy for recovering from this crisis by embracing the concept of the “Doughnut Economy.” The model is developed by British economist Kate Raworth and popularized through her book, “Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist”, released in 2017. Here, she argues that the true purpose of economics does not have to equal growth. Instead, the aim is to find a sweet sport, a way to balance the need to provide everyone with what they need to live a good life, a “social foundation” while limiting our impact on the environment, “the environmental ceiling.” With the help of Raworth, Amsterdam has downscaled this approach to the size of a city. The model is now used to inform city-wide strategies and developments in support of this overarching idea: providing a good quality of life for all without putting additional pressure on the planet. Architecture of the Cloud: The Data Center Footprint

Hình ảnh
In the contemporary context, as has been said a multitude of times, we seem to be living in what is classified as a digital age. A worldwide pandemic has enhanced the popularity of digital avenues to communicate — such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, and the multiplatform messaging app WhatsApp is reported to have over 2 billion active users. From an environmental standpoint, we see the migration of businesses to the “cloud” heralded as a sustainability win. In simplified terms and to pick out a specific example, companies can refrain from storing data on external hard drives, opting instead to store their data on online file hosting services. http://dlvr.it/SkDbwq
