Corvin Technology Park / 3h architects

Hình ảnh
The location. The construction of the Corvin Promenade is Central Europe's largest downtown urban renewal investment, an internationally recognized and award-winning development project. The real estate developmental concept slices out a specific area of the dilapidated building of the district and replaces it with a completely renewed city fabric, which houses commercial, residential, and office buildings. The Corvin Technology Park (C5) is located at the end of this stripe, thus it has a prominent role in closing the central promenade running through the area. Complementing the opposite building, the office building was placed perpendicular to the axis, creating more space between the buildings, while being a definite endpoint of the promenade. http://dlvr.it/S9zzyV

Albert Road House / Magri Williams Architects

Hình ảnh
This project provides a full-width rear extension and whole house refurbishment to a property in North London. Located within the Stroud Green Conservation Area, the sensitive nature of the context was a starting point; Magri Williams carefully explored the form and materiality to establish a soft connection between the new and existing. http://dlvr.it/S9zzy8

Construction on Zaha Hadid Architects' Masaryčka Building is Underway

Hình ảnh
Construction on Zaha Hadid Architects' Masaryčka building in Prague has reached level three, with completed work on the retail levels on the ground and first floors, and ongoing work on the higher floors, which include cantilevered offices and terraced roof gardens. The 28,000 sqm project, which will replace an existing car park, is expected to open in 2023 with a structure that rises seven storeys towards its eastern section and nine storeys at its western end. http://dlvr.it/S9zzxf

Less Waste or More Value: 8 Architecturally Relevant Interventions at the 2021 Dutch Design Week

Hình ảnh
Under the theme of 'The Greater Number', the Dutch Design Week (DDW) returns with a physical edition from the 16 until the 24th of October 2021 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The largest design event in Northern Europe has decided for its comeback to tackle the notion of less consumption, less production, and less waste. Knowing that this is not always possible, the design happening also calls for more sustainable products with more value. http://dlvr.it/S9zzwc

Berkut Baroneza House / Yuri Vital

Hình ảnh
The design process for Berkut Baroneza House starts from a simple initial concept, the creation of a horizontal volume, almost laminar, that would rest softly on the unevenness of the terrain to create its various views - both the intimate and the furthest ones, overlooking the valley ahead. From this first glance, the concept was established: an architecture, subtle and intrinsic to the local context of Bragança Paulista, in the interior of São Paulo.  http://dlvr.it/S9w8zw

OMA / Reinier de Graaf and Buro Happold Reveal Autonomous Design for Health District in Qatar

Hình ảnh
OMA / Reinier de Graaf and Buro Happold have unveiled their design for the Al Daayan Health District in Doha, Qatar. The project explores the "potential of modularity, prefabrication, and automation in relation to the rapid changes in medical science" on a 1.3 million-sqm plot with low cost, cross-shaped modular units that are prefabricated on site. In addition to the prefabrication of the units, a local high-tech farm will supply food and medical plants for medicine production, and a solar farm will allow the district to function autonomously. http://dlvr.it/S9w8zq

"Nature and Structure Connect to Transform Our Landscapes and Even Our Climate": Marc Mimram on His New Bridge in Austria

Hình ảnh
Whether figuratively or in an urban context, bridges are a strong symbol and often become iconic projects in cities. Building bridges can mean creating connections, new opportunities. But they are also fundamental pieces of infrastructure that solve specific issues in an urban context. As these involve highly technical equipment, with complex constructions and overwhelming bold structural requirements, they require projects that do not need full integration between architecture and engineering and, in many contexts, is a type of projects that architects are not so involved with. Marc Mimram Architecture & Engineering is a Paris-based office comprised of an architecture agency and a structural design office. In its project portfolio, there are several bridges, as well as various other project typologies. We spoke with Marc Mimram about his latest project in Austria, the bridge at Linz, photographed by Erieta Attali. http://dlvr.it/S9w8zj

Tintagel Castle Footbridge / Ney & Partners + William Matthews Associates

Hình ảnh
Spanning a 190-foot gorge and with a gasp-inducing gap in the middle, the bridge follows the line of the original route – a narrow strip of land, long lost to erosion – between the 13th-century gatehouse on the mainland and the courtyard on the jagged headland or island jutting into the sea. So significant was this historic crossing that it gave rise to the place’s name, the Cornish Din Tagell meaning “the Fortress of the Narrow Entrance”. http://dlvr.it/S9w8zQ

The Benefits of Comfort Flooring with Cork: When Nature Moves In

Hình ảnh
Cork is obtained from the bark of the cork oak, a slow-growing tree in the Mediterranean region that lives an average of 200 years. The valuable property of the cork oak is that it regenerates itself. After each peeling, the bark grows back. Therefore, no tree is cut down or permanently damaged for the cork harvest. In addition, a peeled cork tree binds more CO2 than an unpeeled tree. http://dlvr.it/S9w8yR

Sports Hall in Borky / OV-architekti

Hình ảnh
The client's brief was to build a sports hall with facilities and a seating tribune next to the Elbe river. The proposal won 1st place in an architectural competition. The plot is located at the northeast edge of Kolín town, close to the tennis courts and an athletic stadium. This sports facilities ensemble is enclosed by deciduous forest and is accessed by a cycle path by the Elbe river. http://dlvr.it/S9rJQq

Hillside House Leuven / Lava architecten

Hình ảnh
Project. The plot is located on one of the most wooded hill ridges in the area. The substrate consists of the typical iron sandstone, which has a very high bearing capacity. The building uses the existing relief as much as possible. It is placed against the hill, sloping in the opposite direction, creating sufficient space between the house and the hill at the front to create a carport. At the back, the house and the hill reach the same level. The slope of the house translates in the interior with floors that change 36 cm in height or 2 steps of stairs. Given the proximity of the forest and the reached height, it feels like you’re living in the treetops. At the front of the house, a stunning view of the valley is created. http://dlvr.it/S9rJQM

The Endemic House / ESEcolectivo

Hình ảnh
In 2015, Dany and Jenny founded the first artisanal brewery on San Cristóbal Island, in Galapagos: La Cervecería Endémica. The proposal sought to be sustainable, natural, and local; as much as possible, considering the limitations of an Island (resources and energy supply, transportation, etc.). After four years of work and with the arrival of their first child, the couple decides to build the first house of their own on a plot of land located on the urban edge of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, one kilometer away from the coast. In the same way as in the brewery, they seek to build their home sustainable, local, and as sensitive as possible to the natural context of the Islands. The Endemic House, therefore, aims to be a simple, efficient house and prioritizes the use of the local workforce and materials. The limited budget represents an important challenge in terms of management and logistics. http://dlvr.it/S9rJNY

Experiencing Design with Real-Time Architectural Visualization

Hình ảnh
Like any other art form, architectural visualization has the power to move your audience, whether it be the design client, potential customers or future tenants. When they can actually experience the design, they’re more likely to interact, collaborate, and comment long before the final version, giving them a sense of contribution to the whole—all while providing you with confidence that the design is really what they want. http://dlvr.it/S9rJKm

N Apartments / Sharqk

The project involved the renovation, completion and redesign of all interior spaces and common areas of an existing structure, abandoned due to the Spanish property bubble crash of 2008.  http://dlvr.it/S9mbDK

Lou Estela / Dario Castellino Architetto

Hình ảnh
Lou Estela arises from the necessity to save and recover an old disused little building collocated in Moiola: a village at the foot of the mountains in Piedmont. The existent was an old simple typical stone shed. Customers wanted a simple and direct solution for residential use with the bare minimum for daily comfort: a bedroom, a toilet, and a living room. http://dlvr.it/S9mbCt

18 Months Later, We Revisit Our Predictions on the Built Environment in a COVID-19 World

Hình ảnh
Only 18 months ago, everyone around the globe had their life upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost immediately, architects and designers began to speculate on how they could design for a better world that would be flexible, functional, and healthy. While the pandemic is far from over, with many scientific advancements and public health policies still needed to truly allow us to live out our “new normal”, perhaps its time to reflect on our predictions and examine what aspects of the pandemic were short-term reactions, and which aspects of life might be permanently reflected in how we think about the built environment. http://dlvr.it/S9mbCP

Ashram College Nieuwkoop / Broekbakema

Hình ảnh
The DNA of the school. “The Ashram breathes warmth,” says former student Evon. “Each student is the architect of their own school career,” according to former director Gert-Jan. The Ashram is characterized by granting everyone, students, teachers, and staff, a chance to be themselves and to develop personally, captured in the slogan of the school: “Personal, multilateral and result-oriented.” The architectural concept is based on these characteristics. http://dlvr.it/S9mb91

Bar-studio Krymská / Papundekl Architects

Hình ảnh
The new bar on Krymská Street has a raw, scenic atmosphere and a versatile space for small cultural events. The bar is part of the lower floor of an apartment building wedged between Francouzská and Krymská streets. We decided to treat the retail facade to Krymská Street in a minimalistic modern style. We replaced the door of the former car workshop with new glazing with an entrance door and replaced the old three-part window with frameless glazing that emphasises a stronger connection to the street. http://dlvr.it/S9k2kd

The Distinctive Mosques of Sub-Saharan Africa

Hình ảnh
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to an enormous number of religious adherents – within which there is extraordinary diversity in religious expression. Iconic buildings serving a religious purpose are found throughout the continent, such as The Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Family in central Nairobi or the Hare Krishna Temple in South Africa. What is evident is that architecture that hosts religious gatherings makes up a key part of the urban fabric of sub-Saharan African cities and that in a lot of cases, religious structures go against the grain – leaving aside or tweaking classical models in favour of a unique architectural approach. http://dlvr.it/S9k2kS

Re-interpret Commercial Building / AGIT STUDIO

Hình ảnh
Situated in a commercial street of the University district in the dense old downtown, ‘project Re-interpret’ operates newly. By making an appropriate and yet unfamiliar suggestion, it grants identity to the anonymous commercial street which is consist of a row of buildings that only exist as a facade covered with commercial signs. ‘project Re-interpret’ is an extension/renovation work that connects two 40-years-old buildings into one, in addition, to make each of them vertically extend. http://dlvr.it/S9k2j6

Brick Pavilion in Two Stages / Estudio Primitivo González

Hình ảnh
The project was born from the will of the town hall to rehabilitate the façade of an existing ruin. The structure had a sunken roof, and only a brick wall remained in a decent condition. The intervention consisted in rehabilitating this wall and extending it with a new one, increasing the size of the space to adapt it for its new function: a multifunctional space and wedding hall for the Justice Courts in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. http://dlvr.it/S9gJwZ

Public Library / MIDE architetti

Hình ảnh
The new library is located in an area of 5.400 m2, occupying only 300 m2, while leaving the remaining surface to a public park. The final result is a building surrounded by green, where to spend a pleasant time. http://dlvr.it/S9gJwQ

What’s Behind Architecture’s Hidden Humor

Hình ảnh
Architecture can be funny. Of course, it often makes for a well-disposed butt of the joke, like when Frank Gehry is satirized on the Simpsons, but buildings themselves can be funny as well. Philosophers like Kant believed humor was in the incongruity between what is expected and what is experienced. There are all sorts of expectations placed on buildings and an infinite number of ways that incongruity might grow between those expectations and what a building actually delivers. This video explores some of the most interesting of these humorous buildings through history, from Giulio Romano’s Mannerism, to SITE Architects BEST stores, and many more. Finally, it points to some contemporary practices that deploy humor to achieve more than just a chuckle. http://dlvr.it/S9gJw7

Gregório Paes Leme House / Brasil Arquitetura

Hình ảnh
A one-story house is a luxury for a city like São Paulo, whose real estate pressure almost always leads to building the maximum amount allowed for the lot. With that in mind, this reform project starts from the exploration of this virtue that is given to us at first. http://dlvr.it/S9bWCX

Portable Cabin / wiercinski-studio

Hình ảnh
Portable cabin is a year-round living space made of two adapted shipping containers. Investors are a couple of brave people who have contact with temporary architecture and are interested in searching for interesting and difficult to adapt spaces. The implementation of a portable cabin and remote workplace turned out to be a great response to the present times. The facility is currently located at the community garden next to the Szelagowski Park in Poznan, and in the future, it is to go to the forest and ultimately stand on the water. Containers were fully prepared in the production hall, while its transport and assembly on the plot took one day, and only the last internal finishing works remained on site. http://dlvr.it/S9bWC6

Creating a beacon and gateway to the Elgar Road Precinct the building provides a point of orientation, wayfinding, and enhanced campus experience. The Deakin Law School Building’s arresting geometry arose from the innovative blend of learning spaces held within. Each space addresses a different emerging methodology of teaching, doing away with the traditional lecture theatre in the process. http://dlvr.it/S9bW7p

House C-DF / Graux & Baeyens Architects

Reducing Cost Without Sacrificing Quality: The Experience of Brazilian Office VAGA

Hình ảnh
Starting from the first sketches of a project, it is essential that the project's design restrictions are well defined. This will guide the project, making it more suitable for its location, owners, and local conditions. Among common restrictions, keeping the project cost low is perhaps the most ubiquitous. We spoke with the VAGA team, an office based in São Paulo, about the challenges and possibilities that working with a tight budget imposes: http://dlvr.it/S9Q7jL

When Design Meets Functionality in Façades: High-Tech Aluminium Surfaces

Hình ảnh
The design of a facade defines its architectural identity. Besides being a barrier against diverse weather conditions, providing acoustic comfort, and regulating light penetration, the external skin of a building determines its character and perception. At first glance, a facade can make the building stand out or blend with its urban environment, or even convey different levels of brightness, translucency, and smoothness. Simultaneously, the structure and color of interior walls and ceilings can leave a lasting impression when entering a room. http://dlvr.it/S9Q7ZP
