Urban Spaces for an Overheated Planet

Hình ảnh
In July 2023, around one-third of the 45 beds at the Phoenix, Arizona Burn Center were filled with individuals who had sustained severe burns from falling on the city's asphalt streets. Public alerts were issued to caution residents about the hazards of extreme heat, leading to temperatures of up to 82°C on a summer afternoon, just below the boiling point, affecting asphalt, concrete, and sidewalks. The hospital director emphasized the rapid occurrence of severe burns, explaining that a mere fraction of a second of contact with these surfaces could lead to injury. Such burns resulted from both accidental stumbling on the streets and fainting induced by the intense heat. http://dlvr.it/T02R6Z

History.  Courtyard B is a classic square courtyard in its typology. It delights the viewer with its precise ridge, eaves, and facade lines, its equally high parts of the building, and its hipped roof landscape all around. In its 200 years old history, the basic structure and external appearance of the courtyard have hardly changed. Functionally speaking, the former main house makes up the classic part of the courtyard facing north, clockwise followed by the cow and pig stall, the threshing floor, and finally, connecting the gateway with the former main house, a vault that closes the courtyard towards the residential wing. http://dlvr.it/T022V0

In the pursuit of celebrating Omani architecture and instilling a spiritual experience, our project embarked on a journey that transcends conventional design boundaries. The question that fueled our endeavor was not just "what," but "how" we could seamlessly integrate tradition, sustainability, and monumentality into a singular architectural masterpiece. http://dlvr.it/T01hmV

What Is an Urban Oasis? Combating the Excessive Heat of Cities

Hình ảnh
We are on the brink of concluding the hottest year in the past 125,000 years. Recently, elevated temperatures have adversely impacted the daily routines of a significant portion of the population, particularly those who spend most of their day outdoors without access to air-conditioned environments. Excessive heat stems from various sources, both natural and human-induced. Given the grim outlook on this matter, it becomes imperative to explore structural measures to address and mitigate the potential deterioration of public health caused by escalating temperatures. http://dlvr.it/SzzwjR

Villa JJ / Metropolis Arkitekter

Hình ảnh
Villa JJ is located on a cliff on the shoreline of Stockholm's southern archipelago. The climate here can be harsh, nature is shaped by rain and storms as much as by sun and drought. The building tradition was characterized by simple buildings, often gathered in clusters to protect each other, such as fishermen's sheds or small farms. The houses were low, clad with wood boards, gray or almost white. http://dlvr.it/Szyr3G

BODEGA Restaurant / Loop Design Studio

Hình ảnh
Vernacular architecture whispers the wisdom of the ages, harmonizing and embracing its materials’ warmth. Bodega is a product of a seamlessly hewn vernacular and bohemian aesthetic. The design of the restaurant yearns for timelessness and emphasizes the use of a natural material palette comprising stone, wood, bamboo, and brick. Bodega’s interior decor is eclectic and whimsical, featuring distinctive sculptural art, lighting fixtures, and furniture. The volume opens into a double-height atrium with a parametric bamboo lighting installation dropping down from the ceiling, thus harnessing the beauty of scale and distorting the perception of a cuboidal shell. The ceiling installation is primarily a lighting fixture reimagined as a vernacular bamboo chandelier. http://dlvr.it/SzxvxS

Jinghope · Life Aesthetics Community / Various Associates

Hình ảnh
The Jinghope · Life Aesthetics Community adopts a design direction different from the popular Beach Club at The Sanya EDITION, which features bamboo-woven structures designed by Various Associates earlier. In this project, the focus is on creating a seamless connection with the hotel's overall vibe and balancing the needs of the hotel and the new businesses. The Jinghope · Life Aesthetics Community connects with the main entrance of the hotel and stands in the circulation route leading to the guest room area, injecting vitality into the public space through the addition of a new circulation. The newly built spiral staircase connects the ground floor to the second floor, directing visitors from the ground floor to the commercial space. Nestled amidst lush vegetation, the open-air contemplation and relaxation areas seamlessly integrate with the indoors. http://dlvr.it/SzxfyG

ANArKH Café & Restaurant / Simplex Architecture

In addition, since the green belt zone is located in front of the building, the café blends in with nature. http://dlvr.it/SzxR9y

BGN Penthouse / Estúdio Mangava

Hình ảnh
The renovation project for the BGN Roof sought to qualify the space in the most surgical way possible to bring out the full potential of the building. Functionality, aesthetics, and updating for new demands are the keywords in the project. Intervening in the typical roof plan was also a way of bringing a unique and more personal character to the family home, which was no longer used as a leisure area. Interventions were carried out in all spaces, expanding environments and improving flows between the large integrated room that includes a TV room, living room, and dining room, with the bar and the external area. http://dlvr.it/Szx6KH

Children's campus Theodoor, on the Brussels Health Campus of the ‘Vrije Universiteit Brussel’ in Jette, has just been officially inaugurated. Children are truly kings and queens on the campus because, in addition to a nursery and primary school, the complex also houses a daycare center, scouts and offices + spaces for ‘Huis van het Kind’, ‘Kind & Gezin’, and ‘CAW’. cuypers & Q architects have created a lively campus that enhances children's experience of nature and is open to the neighborhood. The campus also vouches to witness a far-reaching sustainability approach. OMGEVING (landscaping), Cenergie (technical engineering), Util (structural engineering), and Daidalos-Peutz (acoustics) were also part of the design team. Contractor Houben took care of the construction of the building. http://dlvr.it/SzshJM

House in Torinoki / Taichi Nishishita architect & associate

A residence for my parents in their age 60s. Although the site is widely bordered by a road on the south, it is surrounded by houses, and simply relying on the south side of the road does not provide a sense of security. The site lacks a physical scale, so I wondered how I could create a small, human-like space. http://dlvr.it/SzsgzM

House in Nanjo / Spicy Architects

Hình ảnh
A house for a family of three. The site is located on a hill in a residential area from the 80’s in southern Okinawa. In the surrounding area, there are many uniquely Okinawan houses with a typical almost flat roof and large eaves sitting on a rectangular concrete frame. The shape of the house protects from subtropical storms and prevents strong direct sunlight from penetrating into the interior. For this project, we decided to follow the lead of our predecessors and the context the house is situated in, but with a wooden structure instead, since this was necessary considering the required functions and construction cost. http://dlvr.it/SzsMRx

A Look at the First 10 Editions of the MPavilion in Melbourne, Australia

Hình ảnh
The MPavilion represents one of the most important architectural events happening annually in Melbourne, Australia. Initiated and founded by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, the event was first launched in 2014 and has since brought internationally recognized architects to design a temporary structure in Melbourne's Queen Victoria Gardens in a system similar to London’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. From Sean Godsell's solar-actioned panels to Studio Mumbai‘s experimental bamboo structure, each pavilion explores craftsmanship and contemporary design while fostering a rich cultural program for several months before being disassembled and donated to one of the city’s parks. As the latest pavilion was recently inaugurated by Tadao Ando, we look back at the previous editions of Australia’s most famous annual structure. http://dlvr.it/SzrwKZ

Designing Meeting Rooms for the Contemporary Office: Partitions, Seating, Tables and Lighting

Hình ảnh
“Two brains are better than one,” goes the old saying. And with good reason. As the social beings that we are, humans thrive through interpersonal interactions and the dynamic exchange of ideas. It is these collective thoughts that tend to flourish, evolve and reach their full potential, fueled by a diversity of perspectives and experiences. That is precisely why teamwork stands as one of the most valued pillars of any working environment, and also explains why office workers spend an average of 37% of their time every week sitting in meetings. It’s no surprise then that modern office settings embrace meeting rooms as designated spaces for collaborative ideation and decision-making. But not in the way many might imagine. Gone are the days of bland conference rooms with nothing but a large table, uncomfortable chairs and white walls, giving way to new, more innovative models that respond to a shifting paradigm. http://dlvr.it/Szq9lj

KUDDO Coffee / Xushi Design

Hình ảnh
The unmodified concrete and naturally falling walls are treasures left by the rough and unrestrained factory area, and the core concept of their processing is to continue and protect them. On the premise of preserving the original walls, the use of metal and cement-style materials and retro lighting fixtures has improved the integration of modern furniture and the site. Local military green is naturally embellished, strengthening the recognition of brand elements. The industrial pipelines remaining on the site only need to be slightly utilized to become excellent lighting devices. http://dlvr.it/Szq9V3

This is a building for a construction company, including an office and a workshop. Generally speaking, an office space seems to be created only for working. However, an office space is also a place to take a break, to communicate, and sometimes to welcome visitors. Because it is the place where we spend most of our time, I hope that it is a space that "enriches the mind" rather than a space that merely fulfills a function. http://dlvr.it/Szpr3V

Yeongcheon House of Three Brothers / Plan Architects Office

Species that Disappeared - The process of replacing the old with the new seems natural, but a young couple with three sons was lost in the same residential landscape and standardized house space. Still, it was hard for the couple to make family plans and control their way of living depending on the house structure. Our previous urban housing examples were covered in various media, and the house owners sympathized with our ideas. So, they came all the way from Gyeongbuk Yeongcheon to Jeollado Gwangju. It must have been hard for them to decide on a 6-hour round trip to Gwangju with a pregnant wife. Still, they had a clear motivation. http://dlvr.it/SzmdkT

Sustainable Building Models: An Eco-Friendly Structure in Natural Slate Within a Multi-Ecological Neighborhood

Hình ảnh
Moving towards modernity implies questioning established concepts. Today, we are witnessing several projects and approaches in architecture that explore alternatives to energy-intensive building systems, materials, and technologies commonly used in today's construction. These projects, far from adopting approaches that reject technology, seek to promote conscious architectural practices. They aim to go back to basics through passive strategies, using natural materials and a contextual understanding to develop sustainable architecture. http://dlvr.it/SzjnHD

A peaceful getaway in the forest: the architecture that becomes part of Gotjawal. The Gotjawal forests on Jeju Island evoke enchanting memories throughout the four seasons. Often regarded as the "lung" of Jeju, Gotjawal comprises a lava forest that maintains its lush greenery year-round. Gotjawal designates an area where highly viscous lava separates into large and small rock fragments during volcanic eruptions, resulting in an uneven(凹凸) topographical terrain. Eventually, this process leads to the establishment a primitive forest where trees, vines, and various vegetation intermingle. The term "Got-Jawal" is a compound word, originating from two Jeju dialect words: "got," which signifies a forest, and "jawal," which refers to tangled and untidy bushes in the local dialect. http://dlvr.it/Szjn3S

Although we have not been to the site, we have already had a general imagination of the design through the early communication. Arriving at the site for the first time, I was attracted by the mountain and surrounding natural environment surrounded by the project. However, the current situation of the original building is not ideal. The two houses are located at the corner of the road, backed by the mountain, and the interior and courtyard Spaces are completely exposed to the view of people when they go down the mountain. The Bathroom Behind the Bed: 8 Bedrooms With Integrated Bathrooms

Hình ảnh
Unlike classical architecture, characterized by a series of rooms with very defined functions and spaces, the current architectural design seeks to integrate spaces to achieve high degrees of adaptability and flexibility. In this way, the boundaries of the enclosures are blurred and new solutions appear that are worth analyzing. In the case of bedrooms, bathrooms are often no longer a small and secluded adjoining room – instead, they are now integrated to form a multifunctional space that is subtly concealed. Just like Mies van der Rohe, who used to group services in strategic areas to create open floors, let's review some cases that have adopted the specific solution of the hidden bathroom just behind the bed. http://dlvr.it/Szd9RR
