Kangding Road is an old street in Shanghai's Jing'an district. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was famous for its small factories and alleyways. Today these small factories have gradually moved out, but the commercial atmosphere of the bustling market remains. "The Others" has an unusual place. It is a narrow strip of two rooms along the street. The wide one is 3 meters and the narrow one is only 1.5 meters. Limited by the brick and concrete structure of the old house, they are connected only by a doorway at the end. Architecture often begins with understanding and embracing the constraints of a particular brief and site. This proved especially true for the reconfiguration and extension of an existing building in Hampstead, where - given its prominent yet nestled position between Hampstead High Street and Bird in Hand Yard - space was considerably confined. The Bird in Hand, once a local watering hole of Hampstead until it changed hands to The Dome cafe in the early ’80s and later Cafe Rouge, is a five-story Victorian structure, which included two cramped flats to the upper floors, accessed via an external escape stair to the rear. It has been refurbished and extended to create two two-bedroom flats to the upper floors, offices to the first floor, and flexible retail/restaurant spaces to the ground and basement floors. http://dlvr.it/S6d9Rk

The term “mid-century modern” conjures up images of a sharp-suited Don Draper, slender teak cabinets, and suave chairs from Scandinavia. That is, at least, one perspective of the design movement and a view more of 1950s-era Manhattan offices than anything else. The redevelopment of the Reuilly barracks is currently one of the major building sites in the French capital. This ambitious project, in the heart of the 12th arrondissement, entails the rehabilitation of a former military barracks whose foundations date back to the 17th century. It involves the construction of 600 social housing units, a public garden, crèche, premises for commercial and associative activities, and artists’ studios. Named after the Rubik's cube toys, the nine-boxes form could be interpreted as a subconscious reference to the feng shui Bagua map. It’s a belief that can’t be replaced by most houses in the Chinese Indonesian community. A tribute to the essence of the Costa Smeralda. "Architecture is lived in while art is looked at; this is a fundamental difference. Chia Tai Farm is a small-scale (310 sq.m.) urban cuisine restaurant that serves the menu by following the concept of farm-to-table. The restaurant space consists of a Fresh Product Market area, a Tree bar, a Dining area, a Dining garden, a Home garden product, a Chef table room, and a Seed gallery. Stood astride an existing London stock brick wall and incorporating a range of brick bonding styles, including a unique vertically-bonded structural wall, Southwark Brick House in Bermondsey is a showcase for this highly versatile building material. K House is situated in a dense urban neighborhood and faces a busy railway. The client’s family, who had lived on the site for several generations, saw the town grow from a quiet coastal suburb to a popular tourist destination. The rustic village of Vals in the Swiss Alps is one of the country’s most picturesque areas, located at an altitude of 1250 meters above sea level with numerous exceptional projects. The main square is surrounded by original Vals houses roofed with stone tiles made of Vals quartzite. Throughout the years, the village maintained its authentic residential and rural typology, making sure that its agriculture and rural fabric remained intact. Perhaps the most powerful natural resource of the Vals Valley, one that has nurtured its landscape and wilderness, is the water. Located in a sprawling housing estate in Nonthaburi province, considered the northern suburb of Bangkok, TYH House is situated on an irregular-shaped plot of land fronting part of the bulbous end of a cul-de-sac. A new town hall, which is a modern building, due to its importance, fits in with appropriate dominance in the urban environment. We are entrusted with an infrastructure, which houses 3 horses, a utility room, drinking troughs, a toilet, and saddle space. Home to a young family with working parents the design had to offer a relaxing ambiance. In a small village in the county of Cameros, La Rioja we find a very spe­cial house. Unlike the structures near­by, this house is defined by a monumen­tal, five-story high façade, composed of thick, stone walls and symmetrical openings. Each floor, which has the same distribution and dimensions, is connect­ed by a spiraling wooden staircase end­ing in a skylight that brings light in. The family house has been built in the city called Mogyoród, Hungary located east of Budapest, next to traditional family houses. The vernacular history of the neighbouring houses influenced the architectural character resulting in a simple, restrained appearance. The concept of the office space was developed for a young team of IT specialists united by a common idea and aspirations, which served as the starting point in the development of the interior. A large open and understandable space with monolithic concrete structures preserved in their original form is a kind of basic element, setting a certain entourage and tone for the entire space. The solution concentrates living and resting spaces in one plane, connecting each other through a large space, stretching continuously from front to back of the house. All daily activities such as cooking, taking care taking care of trees, children playing, the elderly exercising... are connected in this space. This project is designed for a private client in their 578 m2 empty land located in Karawaci, Indonesia. The design approach in this land is based on client requests where tropical mixed with rustic Balinese design for the main idea of the building. Tropical Design involves natural lighting and airflow circulation, with the usage of glass and void in particular. Concepting the design where important areas such as master bedroom, living, Dining, and Pantry will get the best view without forgetting about the privacy of the client. URAM Extreme Park is the largest extreme park in Russia, built in 2020 by Legato Sports Architecture. The architects faced a difficult task — to build a park that: 1) combines all the sports facilities necessary to prepare extreme athletes for high-level competitions, such as Olympic Games, 2) has simple extreme zones where amateur athletes will be able to develop their riding skills, 3) fits into the context of the historical city center of Kazan, 4) will become an open and free public space for urban recreation. http://dlvr.it/S64q5X

The house with a pub and multi-purpose hall is situated in the heart of Máslovice, a village north of Prague. Nestled at the base of the Catalina mountains adjacent to a protected peak, the Ventana House is a window on the desert. Deciding where a building should go is a complex negotiation of visible and invisible, objective and subjective forces. Architects perform site analysis in order to identify and choreograph all these factors, but which factors do they focus on? This video is a survey (pun intended) of what goes into locating where a building should go on the Earth’s surface. From legal requirements like lot lines and setbacks, to infrastructural concerns like service hookup locations and pedestrian ways, to environmental factors like sunlight and topography, the video goes through how architects and contractors position structures. The Walters asked us to make a significant addition to their 1920’s bungalow to accommodate their growing family. The new volume has a lofted den, two children’s bedrooms, a shared childrens’ bath, an office in the loft, a new primary bedroom suite, and an upper-level deck, the location, and elevation of which was selected to gather views of the city. The kitchen, living, and guest functions remain in the original house. The addition is different than the house, connected to it by a glass hall, but still crafted from real materials to communicate empathy for the old bungalow. http://dlvr.it/S5zYf9

Located on a remote hillside between the Urkiola natural park and the Urdaibai biosphere reserve, the project's site is found slightly set apart from a cluster of historic farmhouses of the Barrio Aldana, a nucleus of listed buildings. The reconstruction of the former Caserío Azkarraga by BABELstudio and Bonadona Arquitectura accommodates three different yet interrelated uses on a plot previously occupied by a two-story stone house and a number of outbuildings. The mid-19th-century original building and its more recent, single-story extension were found in ruins with only the perimetral, partially up to one-meter-deep masonry walls possible to preserve. Tucked away in the busy commercial basement of Shanghai’s Kerry Center, Ethai Café offers a fresh take on traditional Thai cuisine, focusing on simple light dishes created from healthy ingredients. The earthy color and material palette is based on gradients reminiscent of central Thailand’s archaeological sites and lands, and its nooks and sitting areas appear to have been carved out of the rammed earth that envelops the façade. http://dlvr.it/S5w6v5

The project to reform the Farinera de Can Suau consists of the performance of a forgotten urban corner in Llubí (Mallorca). Bounded by the rear facades of the adjoining houses, there are two buildings that have historically functioned, one conditioned by the other. It is the Molí de Can Suau, a heritage building, as well as its attached "Farinera", a later construction dating from 1900. The proposal consists of urban action, generating a new semi-public urban space in the municipality. Honoring Shenzhen’s history as a regional market town, the master plan for Bao’an OCT OH BAY breathes new energy into China’s first economic zone. Laguarda.Low Architects' concept for the 128-acre park is a representation of growth, joining commerce with world-class cultural facilities. Located along with a three-quarter-mile waterfront site, the program features four primary zones — East and West Waterfront Retail Park; Urban Business Center; and Waterfront Cultural Park. Construction is underway for Gehry Partners' Second Century Project, which will house the new headquarters of Warner Bros. After breaking ground in early 2020, the project now has its structural framework in place, and the façade is currently taking shape. Settled lightly in the corner of an erstwhile paddock, the Dart is formed by two narrow wings, one housing the living areas, the other housing bedrooms, connected by a triangular roof. The two blocks shelter a large verandah stretched between them from the ocean winds. Gumi, 2nd largest city in Gyeongsangbuk-do in the southeast part of Korea, is a town I called home for all of my 26 years of life until I moved to Seoul to work at an architecture firm. It was 5 years later when I decided to take a break and return home, exhausted and depleted physically as well as mentally in desperate search of breathing room. At the same time, it also happened to be when my parents wanted to move along with their plan to build a house for their retirement and I wanted to help them any way I could. This project is located in Dajing Alley, Hangzhou City, which connects the densely crowded Zhongshan Middle Road and Hefang Street. This alley has been located in the bustling core area since it was called Wushanfang back in the Southern Song Dynasty. The store is the pilot Metal Hands coffee shop runs in Hangzhou City, which is a risky decision for the client. How to integrate this domestic specialty coffee brand from northern China into this historical city in the south? It was the core challenge for the design team and the client either. Considering the preservation and integration with the historical communities. We decided to abandon the sense of modernity and industrialization, restore the elegant and leisurely life scene of the Song Dynasty. In the world of design and urban planning, aesthetics and functionality seem to take the spotlight, especially in how large-scale housing projects are developed. While this can be a good thing that continuously pushes the modern boundary of what we consider to be a dwelling, in some aspects, it has shined a negative light on how we perceive and stigmatize “bad design” in public and affordable housing, the socioeconomic factors that have created the need for it, and the types of residents who benefit most from these types of housing policies. http://dlvr.it/S5j986
