Architecture as Celebration: The Philosophies of B.V. Doshi

Hình ảnh
“I am not an architect,” he says with a sparkle in his eyes, “I am merely a person seeking out their destiny.” To the late pioneer of Indian modernism, Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, architecture was a practice of self-discovery. The veteran’s stellar works of poetic functionality resulted from a humanist philosophy bearing the influence of modernist principles, Mahatma Gandhi, and Indian spiritual texts. Doshi believed that architecture was synonymous with life - a vehicle for constant celebration; a medium for heightened experiences. His greatest contribution to the architecture community was his powerful words of wisdom that echo the timelessness of his structures. http://dlvr.it/Shj9NP

Apartment Refurbishment in Barcelona / NOMO STUDIO

Hình ảnh
Largely untouched since its construction in the 1970s, this Barcelona penthouse underwent a complete redistribution to suit contemporary open-plan living. The design of the project responds to a modernized approach to a classic building in general and the will to preserve its inherited elegance, all in line with the preferences of the clients. The superfluous partitions are eliminated, connecting all the day areas in a large fluid space, thus preventing corridors. http://dlvr.it/ShfH5S

Floating Cities of the Past and Future

Hình ảnh
The threat of climate change is looming before us. Sea level rise concerns over 410 million people at risk of losing their livelihoods. Coastal cities are choked with high-rise buildings and traffic-laden roads, consuming land insufficiently. Synthesizing these problems, architects across the world have proposed a potential answer - floating cities. A future of living on water seems like a radical shift from how people live, work, and play. Vernacular precedents prove otherwise, offering inspiration for what our cities could morph into. As world leaders discuss courses of action to tackle climate change at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt, ArchDaily dives into the concept of radical water-based settlements. http://dlvr.it/ShcBll

Copenhagen Architecture City Guide: 20 Projects to Discover in the 2023 UNESCO World Capital of Architecture

Hình ảnh
For most architecture enthusiasts, mentions of the city of Copenhagen will prompt images of pedestrian-friendly streets, suspended bike lanes, quaint water canals, and overall happy residents. The capital of Denmark has many accomplishments to boast: over 60 percent of its residents commute to work by bike, it was among the first cities to set up a strategic plan to achieve carbon neutrality, resulting in an 80% decrease since 2009, and it has become of the most cited study cases for its urban planning and infrastructure. To add to the list, UNESCO has named Copenhagen the 2023 World Capital of Architecture, prompting an array of architecture-focused events and festivals. The title further emphasizes the city’s position as a laboratory for innovative contemporary architecture and people-centered urban planning. http://dlvr.it/ShWT0G

House S / Yonder – Architektur Und Design

Hình ảnh
With Haus S, a couple from Berlin wanted to realize their vision of a house that grows. Planned in the first step as a holiday home on a small budget, at a later stage it was to be expanded into a retirement residence. Under a roof that was conceived as a kind of extended raised hide with a fantastic view of the mountains, further floors were to be added gradually. http://dlvr.it/ShSbx7

Oscar Niemeyer's Unfinished Architecture for Lebanon's International Fair Inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage in Danger List

Hình ảnh
On the grounds of the Tripoli International Fair (Rashid Karameh International Exhibition Center) in Lebanon, one finds one of the five largest exhibition centers in the world. The 15 structures, designed by legendary Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1963, remain unfinished due to the project's abandonment during the country's civil war in 1975. Inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List and World Heritage in Danger List, on January 25th, 2023, the 70-hectare site is located between the historic center of Tripoli and the port. In 2022, the renovation of one of the structures on the site, the Niemeyer Guest House, by East Architecture won the Aga Khan Award. http://dlvr.it/ShSbhB

Schoenenkwartier Shoe Museum / Civic Architects

Hình ảnh
The Schoenenkwartier Museum is a new and innovative knowledge center for shoe design, shoe production, and shoe fashion in the center of Waalwijk, the Dutch leather and shoe city. It is housed in a listed building complex from the 1930s, by architect Alexander Kropholler, which has been partly renovated, transformed, and expanded. The buildings now house a collection of 12,000 objects, several permanent exhibitions, a knowledge center with a research library, workshop space and auditorium, a museum café, and laboratories for design and prototyping. Both the planning and design of the building and its interior map out a new inspiring future for the industry, the city, and the community, built on the values of the past. http://dlvr.it/ShPjDW

Crafting Spatial Experiences: Service Design in Architecture

Hình ảnh
Architecture has the power to emotionally engage with its occupants. Tactfully crafted spatial moments extend architecture into experience design - a growing need in the experience economy. Through sensorial and intellectual stimulation, spaces can deeply connect with their occupants to result in memorable instances. The orchestration of an experience requires not only an understanding of spatial principles but also how the service of the space is designed. http://dlvr.it/ShLngz

Casa Lorena / Workshop, Diseño y Construcción

Hình ảnh
Casa Lorena is located in Mérida historic downtown in Mexico and is part of what was once a house from the beginning of the 20th century, the property has been divided several times until reaching its current dimensions with only 4.5 meters front, a quarter of its original size. The house has a small inset with respect to the street and the walkway, something not common to find in the center of the city, and which creates a small access area. Crossing the façade in pastel tones, we access a small living room, with ceilings over 5 meters high and which still preserves its Decauville beams brought from France in the henequén (sisal) era, and which were part of the construction system of that period, together with the wooden beams. http://dlvr.it/ShHzGl

Silena Hotel / noa* network of architecture

Hình ảnh
Architecture that spans the history of multiple generations has always had a certain allure to it—like that of the historic ‘Moarhof’, today known as Hotel Silena. Located at the far end of Valler Tal, the hotel has recently marked a new chapter in its history that bears the signature of noa*. http://dlvr.it/ShHz63

15 Open Living Rooms that Connect Inside and Outside

The connection between interior and exterior is one of the most desired qualities in architectural projects. Such a feature appears in several memorials, and it is achieved with distinction. It appears in unusual places such as bathrooms or kitchens, but it gains greater magnitude in living and meeting spaces. http://dlvr.it/ShFxRR

10 Innovative Cabins That Experiment With Their Materials

Hình ảnh
While the traditional image of the cabin is one of a rustic wooden home located far away from any trace of society, architects have been experimenting with these conventions alongside newer material and technological considerations to push the boundaries of the ‘cabin’ today. Whether it is by reimagining the aesthetics of the cabin, utilizing advanced fabrication techniques to modernize the rustic, or even reconfiguring the log cabin for the city setting, architects and designers have utterly transformed traditional cabin architecture for a more contemporary existence. Below, we consider 10 innovative cabins that achieve this transformation through experiments with different materials and construction technologies. While each explore different strategies and functions, many share similarities in their use of prefabrication systems, their dedication to sustainability, and their close attention to and optimization of specific material properties. http://dlvr.it/ShCyXk

Adding Fresh Hanging Gardens to Residential Architecture

Hình ảnh
If ancient Hellenic sources are to be believed, hanging gardens have existed at least since antiquity when the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon were described by writers such as Herodotus and Philo of Byzantium. Today, vertical gardens have proliferated alongside the interest in indoor plants and gardens, especially in suitable climates. This trend in architecture reflects a simultaneous uptick in interest toward sustainability and a more pastoral, back-to-nature lifestyle. In the projects listed below, several of the architects mention moving forward from an industrial past—with its concomitant environmental effects—toward a better future, or at least a secluded, fresh, and natural outpost amidst the chaos of modern city life. Indoor gardens, and the visual allure of hanging plants and climbing vines, provide the setting for such a life. These vertical designs simultaneously conserve space and embed the plants within the atmosphere of the house, ensuring the space feels as much like ...

Hình ảnh
The plot owned by IBAVI has a rectangular shape with an approximate area of 3,266 m2. The proposed proposal attends to two fundamental aspects, the correct insertion of the building in the urban and physical environment as well as a solution that is a synthesis of the functional aspects of the program. The building is organized by a north-south axis that gives rise to the location of two independent volumes, creating a public space between them. http://dlvr.it/Sh6Dgb

Is Roman Concrete Self-Healing? Research Reveals the Reason for Its Long-Lasting Durability

Hình ảnh
Roman aqueducts built more than 2,000 years ago are still in operation. The Pantheon in Rome remains the largest dome made of unreinforced concrete in the world, with a diameter of 43.3 meters. At the same time, it is not unusual to see structures less than a decade old collapsing. Understanding why Roman structures remain standing has been the subject of studies by many researchers around the world. Why, even in hostile environments such as coastlines or seismic zones, do these structures remain intact? Is there some miraculous material or method that has been lost in history? An international group of researchers led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has shed light on these questions, discovering that these structures had a previously overlooked capacity for self-healing, and the potentially huge environmental impact it can have, to create more durable concrete structures in the future. http://dlvr.it/Sh3DsK

Swampy Hollow / BLDUS

Hình ảnh
Swampy Hollow is a project of entrances, reimagining the front and the rear of an existing 1990’s wooded home. At the front entry, simple 6x6 wood columns and a chunky 6x12 beam replace outdated decorative columns. At the rear, a small screened porch addition is a lofty but cozy structure that nestles into the complicated roof line by rhyming with the existing main gable of the house. http://dlvr.it/Sh0FM3

6 Housing Units in Paris / mobile architectural office

Hình ảnh
The site is located at the intersection of three characteristic Parisian urban situations not far from the Canal Saint-Martin: Rue Robert Blache, punctuated by small white rendered faubourien buildings with discreet mode nature, Rue du Terrage, largely occupied by a large HBM-type complex with neat brick facades and the operation around Place Raoul Follereau, an imposing housing complex, built in the early 1980s and marked by a reinterpretation of classical language, which can be described as postmodern. http://dlvr.it/SgxTZy

Designing the Built Environment for Generation Alpha

Hình ảnh
Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z have long dominated the conversation around how different generations influence architecture and the built environment. From views around city planning and zoning efforts to the great debate about whether workplaces should be completely open or office-intensive, each generation has had its strong opinions about how spaces we inhabit are designed- largely shaped by the socio-economic, political, and technological influences that have shaped our lives in different ways. Looking ahead, what can we expect next? Enter Generation Alpha, the first generation born entirely within the 21st century. http://dlvr.it/SgvNsz

Terrorism in Brasília: The Symbolic Consequences of the January Attacks

Hình ảnh
Few places in the world have an overlap of complexities as intense as Brasília. Even so, its architecture symbolizes the Republic and democracy of Brazil, and any act of attack on these symbols carries meanings and consequences for Brazilian memory and cultural heritage. The terrorist acts of January 2023 destroyed part of the heritage and raised questions beyond objects and architecture, touching on education, culture and national political capital. http://dlvr.it/Sglmsf

Ways To Go Back Home Installation / Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo

In a landscape designed by tall and voluminous treetops, a path winds through the ground. In one of its curves, 14 wooden props lightly structure a simple support, supporting an even lighter coverage. Supporting themselves in the form of a tripod, these props design two porticos, on which steel cables are tensioned – balanced by the visible weight of 4 concrete pieces. http://dlvr.it/SghvxN

Urban Refuge Studio House / Estudio Berzero Jaros

On the central area and practically linked to the Arroyo La Cañada, there is a land of 9 x 16 meters to solve a small urban refuge. The intervention bets on the renovation of the existing fabric, in one of the many urban residual spaces that we find in the city. With the objective of making its small contribution in stopping the constant expansion of the city, it takes advantage of the current services and infrastructures, improving and adding value on the built heritage. http://dlvr.it/SghvhZ

Could Salt Be a Material of the Future? Innovating with Crystallized Salt Panels

Hình ảnh
Sodium chloride, most commonly known as salt, is everywhere. Ancient in its uses and abundant in nature, it preserves local ecosystems, de-ices roads, is vital in a variety of industrial processes, and is likely sitting on your kitchen table as a seasoning for your meals. Today, it is attributed relatively little value –considering it used to be as worthy as gold–, and unlike other nature-derived alternatives such as algae or mycelium, there doesn’t seem to be enough research and interest around all of its physical, mechanical or aesthetic properties. And yet it is a material with infinite, extraordinary potential. Apart from its life-supporting qualities, salt is affordable, easily available, antibacterial, resistant to fire, can store humidity and heat, and is great at reflecting and diffusing light. http://dlvr.it/SghvMD

Brasília From Above: Aerial Videos by Joana França

Hình ảnh
If you haven't gotten a chance to visit Brasília, Joana França's photographic projects offer a comprehensive interpretation of the capital of South America's most populous country. França has dedicated a significant part of her career as an architecture photographer to the pursuit of amassing an impressive archive of images of the city planned by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. http://dlvr.it/Sgdz9C

Santa Ana de Porcuna Chapel Restoration / Pablo Millán

Hình ảnh
The architectural space is defined by light and matter. Building a space is not a constructive exercise, but the process by which these two elements coexist. This project revolves around the remains of what was the hermitage of Santa Ana de Porcuna. A space battered by the vicissitudes of abandonment and aggressive interventions with the building. The main objective of the project was, by recovering and restoring the pre-existing elements, to provide the necessary spatiality to recover the essentials of a religious space. http://dlvr.it/Sgb8P9

Workspaces, Benches and Gardens: Interventions to Make the Most of Windows

Hình ảnh
Usually, a window is an exterior opening that provides lighting and ventilation to the interior of a building. This connection with the context, added to appropriate lighting, makes it fundamental in the house. It is possible to improve your design so that it has different uses. Therefore, we have compiled some tips on how to take advantage of the sill to assign new functions to a room. http://dlvr.it/SgY6rP

82SAN Restoration and Extension of a House Between Dividing Walls / Vallribera Arquitectes

Hình ảnh
The unique characteristics of this row house come from a very narrow plot (3.8 meters wide) and a very long backyard. The clients, a couple with two children, need the standard program for a family of four. Within the volume of the existing building, we agree to put in three bedrooms of similar sizes and proportions. On the ground floor, looking over the street, the older son’s bedroom. On the second floor, two more bedrooms: one for the couple and the other for the younger son, each located along one of the façades. The center is occupied by two bathrooms: one on the second floor and another on the ground floor, also for guests. The volume of the building is expanded in order to place the kitchen-dining-living room adjacent to the patio garden, at the same level. A new loft space is added under the roof, which provides an extra multi-purpose room that can be used as a study or as a fourth bedroom. The original staircase is maintained. There is no need for a parking area. http://dlvr.i...

Caramão BN House / Joao Tiago Aguiar Arquitetos

Hình ảnh
Renovation and expansion of a semi-detached house in Caramão neighbourhood, Lisbon. The highlight is drawn to the extension at the back, made possible by moving forward the rear façade into the interior of the plot, resulting in the fully redrawing of the façade which allowed a good number of interior changes. This façade has few visual elements, where only the essential prevails in contrast with the diversity and characteristic disorder of the usual patio environments. http://dlvr.it/SgSd1D

Two Houses at Vidrà / Sau Taller d'Arquitectura

Hình ảnh
The plot, located on the street Calle de la Font, has a demanding topography with more than four meters of unevenness on the north-south axis. The road, on the south façade, has a slope that exceeds 20% and surrounds the house until it ends in a substantially flat open space to the north, forming a very pleasant space in the summer. On the other hand, the plot benefits from a very good orientation, with sunlight all day and privileged views of the surrounding landscape; the mountains of Bisaura, the town, and, above all, the church and its bell tower. http://dlvr.it/SgScs3

Best Articles of 2022: Sources of Inspiration, Tools and Knowledge

Hình ảnh
2022 brought with it what is now known as the triple ‘C’ crises – COVID, Climate, and Conflict, with new environmental challenges, boiling disputes, and an ongoing health emergency, fueling a growing inequality, creating wider gaps, and contributing to more poverty. However, 2022 wasn’t only a year of difficulties, it actually opened up a closed-off world, allowing people to come together through traveling, events, and lesser health restrictions, to reflect on how to build “more resilient, sustainable, and healthy societies” that can survive current and future threats. http://dlvr.it/SgPqV0

House D-S / GRAUX & BAEYENS Architecten

Hình ảnh
House D - S ‒ New construction opens up a view of the surroundings. If you looked carefully, from the lot, you could see no fewer than three beautiful long-distance views of the surrounding rolling fields. However, the pastoral beauty was often hidden by the obstacles inherent to the (dis)order of a natural accumulation of buildings. The basic concept for the new building was therefore to reveal the panorama to its fullest by consciously framing it in a series of unique frames. In this way, an aesthetic added value arose from the need to provide an answer to the contextual limitations. http://dlvr.it/SgLw94

Africa at Architecture Biennials: Questioning Difficult Histories of Representation

Hình ảnh
From the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial to the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, architecture exhibitions are ever-increasing fixtures on cultural calendars around the contemporary world. New editions of architecture exhibitions rest on a foundation propagated by exhibitions of the past – and these historical expositions, to a great degree, have shaped the architectural discourse we have today. But as these exhibitions were born out of a western framework, African historical representations on the biennial and triennial architectural stage have often been reductive, with an assortment of cultures flattened into one, and distinct architectural styles meshed in an incoherent manner. http://dlvr.it/SgJ2Wb

Plants in the Bathroom: Different Ways to Bring Greenery Inside

Hình ảnh
Indoor landscaping can be possible in different ways. Bringing greenery into indoor environments has demonstrated several beneficial factors for the quality of space and its users. Living rooms and offices usually have a dedicated space for plants, but this is not always the case for bathrooms. Therefore, we have listed some ways to bring vegetation to this often underestimated room. http://dlvr.it/SgFZDm

Topography, Legislation and Landscape: What to Consider When Building a House

Hình ảnh
One of the first decisions to be made when designing a house is where to place it on the site. Whether it's a large or small plot, house placement impacts the architecture of the building itself and its relation with the neighborhood. Therefore, it must be carefully thought out and designed. http://dlvr.it/SgCmnt
